Pixel phones have struggled with a persistent battery problem in recent months. The March 2026 Pixel Drop appears to have introduced an issue that causes excessive battery drain across a broad range of Pixel devices. Although Google released its April update this week, that update did not resolve the problem for many users.
Users have been reporting the issue across Reddit and Google’s support forums since the March rollout. Many owners say their phones no longer last a full day under normal use, losing several hours of usable battery life compared with performance before the update. Reports indicate the problem affects models from the Pixel 7 through the Pixel 10 Pro, though not every device running the March update is impacted. To date, Google has not issued an official acknowledgement of the bug.
So what might be causing the increased drain? A now-deleted Reddit post suggested a likely culprit: the March update may have introduced a bug that prevents the CPU from entering Android’s Deep Doze mode. Deep Doze is a low-power state designed to reduce background activity while the device is idle, and if the CPU cannot enter that state, battery consumption can rise substantially.
The deleted post described a process looping roughly four times per second, effectively stopping the processor from ever fully resting. Another line of investigation points to a GPS-related component refusing to suspend when idle. In that scenario, the GPS or a related subsystem remains active even when radios are disabled, and the phone is in Airplane Mode, keeping the CPU awake and consuming power. The reason the Reddit post was removed or moderated is unclear.
Why Google Still Hasn’t Addressed It
Google has not confirmed either of the proposed explanations. A public report filed in Google’s Issue Tracker has attracted significant attention—garnering more than 99 comments—indicating that the problem has been noticed by many users and is likely on Google’s radar. Despite that attention, an official response or a published timeline for a fix has not appeared.
This situation follows a frustrating precedent: a similar battery drain issue surfaced after a December 2025 update and required a follow-up patch to resolve. The current timing is particularly unfortunate given that Google introduced Play Store battery drain warning labels for apps in March 2026, a feature intended to help users identify apps that consume excessive power in the background. Ironically, the system update released the same month appears to be the source of the new battery complaints.
For now, affected users have tried various troubleshooting steps—restarting devices, checking app battery usage, disabling background activity for suspect apps, and performing factory resets in extreme cases—but none of these measures offer a consistently reliable workaround. Some users report temporary improvement after rebooting or updating individual apps, yet the underlying drain resurfaces for many.
The most plausible paths to a fix are either a follow-up Pixel Drop or an update to Google Play Services or a related system component. Until Google provides guidance or a patch, users concerned about battery performance should monitor official channels for updates, review battery usage details in Settings to identify any unusually active processes, and consider conservative power-saving measures like reducing screen brightness, limiting background activity, and enabling battery saver modes when necessary.
While the exact root cause remains unconfirmed, the volume of reports and the behavior described—process activity preventing Deep Doze or a GPS-related subsystem refusing to suspend—offer credible directions for investigation. A targeted software update should be able to address the underlying bug, but the timeline for such a fix is currently unknown.
