Instagram has implemented protections that block screenshots and screen recordings of Instants to limit the potential for images to be copied or redistributed. In addition, Instants includes an “undo” button that allows senders to retract a photo before it is viewed, giving users a last-minute option to prevent an unintended share. There is also a “snooze” function that temporarily hides the Instants stack from a user’s inbox, providing a way to pause incoming ephemeral content without fully disabling the feature.
For senders who want to preserve certain moments, Instagram offers a private archive where users can access their own past Instants for up to one year. This archive also includes a simple compilation tool to turn saved Instants into a “recap” format that can be shared to Instagram Stories. The archive and recap options give users flexibility to either keep moments ephemeral or selectively preserve them for future sharing.
Instagram has begun rolling out Instants globally within the main Instagram app, and Meta is also testing a standalone Instants app in select countries. The gradual rollout means that availability may vary by region while the company monitors user feedback and usage patterns. As Instants becomes more widely available, Instagram may refine features, controls, and safety measures to better serve user needs.
