It’s a busy weekend for many carmakers with events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed underway. EV veteran BYD has now unveiled the BYD Shark, its first plug-in hybrid pickup truck aimed at European markets. The Shark introduces a Super Hybrid DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) system and represents BYD’s attempt to blend efficiency with performance in a practical work- and leisure-oriented package.
Priced from £47,290, BYD positions the Shark as a performance-oriented pickup that still prioritizes economy and usability. The powertrain pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system to produce a combined output of 436 PS and 650 Nm of torque. That power enables a 0-62 mph sprint in around 5.7 seconds, giving the pickup sporty acceleration uncommon in its class while still offering the benefits of electrified driving.
The electric side of the Shark is anchored by BYD’s 32.2 kWh Blade Battery, which delivers a pure-electric driving range of roughly 55.9 miles under the manufacturer’s testing. Charging performance is competitive for a plug-in truck: using a 55 kW DC fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 30% to 80% in about 21 minutes, allowing for quick top-ups on the go.
Structurally, the Shark sits on a rugged ladder-frame chassis that incorporates cell-to-chassis battery integration for improved protection and rigidity. This construction is designed to handle demanding work duties and off-road conditions while safeguarding the battery pack. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system includes selectable terrain modes to adapt traction and drive behavior across varying surfaces. Tow capability is strong for the segment, with a 2,500 kg towing capacity, and the payload rating reaches up to 790 kg, covering a broad range of commercial and recreational hauling needs.
Utility is further enhanced by an onboard 6.6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) system featuring two power sockets. This enables the truck to power tools, appliances, or other electrical equipment directly from its battery, increasing the vehicle’s versatility for job sites, camping, or remote work scenarios where mains power is not available.
The cabin is laid out like an SUV, offering five seats and a design focus on comfort and convenience. The dashboard is dominated by a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, complemented by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. BYD equips the Shark in a single high-spec trim that comes with comfort and tech features as standard: heated and ventilated vegan-leather front seats, a premium 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, and an extensive suite of driver-assistance and safety systems aimed at reducing driver workload and increasing on-road confidence.
