Taking off your Pixel Watch to shower or for any short break has long meant re-entering a PIN the moment you strap it back on. That inconvenience is the price of keeping a secure passcode on your wrist. Now, Google appears to be working on a simpler approach that could let your watch unlock automatically when your Pixel phone is already unlocked nearby.
A recent discovery reported by Android Authority revealed a new option in the Connected Phone & Watch services app called Phone to Watch Unlock. This feature reverses the existing Watch Unlock capability: instead of the watch unlocking the phone, the phone would unlock the watch. The change promises to spare users from tapping a tiny screen to enter a PIN or draw a pattern after every brief removal.
When Phone to Watch Unlock is enabled, the workflow becomes straightforward. You unlock your Pixel phone as usual, and your paired Pixel Watch will unlock automatically at the same time, provided the phone is nearby and already unlocked. That eliminates repeated PIN or pattern entry on the watch so long as your phone remains within range and unlocked.
Setting up the feature still requires a one-time authentication step. During initialization, you would enter your watch’s current PIN or pattern on your phone to confirm ownership and security intent. After that confirmation, the phone takes responsibility for unlocking the watch automatically. App code hints even suggest Google may present an onboarding prompt such as “Automatically unlock your watch?” to make setup simple and transparent.
Why this fix has been a long time coming
Google already offers a Watch Unlock feature that allows a Pixel Watch to unlock a paired Pixel phone. That functionality, introduced in 2023, works only in one direction: the watch unlocks the phone. In practice, that one-way approach created a frustrating experience. If you remove the watch, even briefly for a shower or to change clothes, you must re-enter a PIN on the watch when you put it back on.
Phone to Watch Unlock appears inside the same Connected Phone & Watch services app that manages other pairing and proximity features, including Left Behind alerts that warn you when your phone and watch separate. The implementation is tied to Pixel hardware, which suggests Google intends this as a Pixel-first feature. As a result, it likely will not be available on non-Pixel Wear OS devices, at least initially.
Because this discovery came from an APK teardown rather than an official announcement, there is no confirmed release date yet. That said, Google’s next Made by Google event is scheduled for August 12, and rumors have long suggested a new Pixel Watch could appear alongside other Pixel hardware. If Google times the rollout with that event, the Phone to Watch Unlock feature would arrive at a logical moment when new devices and software improvements are being highlighted.
For users, this change would be a practical improvement to daily life. It keeps security intact—requiring the one-time PIN or pattern confirmation during setup—while reducing friction for frequent, brief removals of the watch. The approach balances convenience and safety by relying on the presence of an unlocked phone nearby rather than removing authentication entirely.
Until Google confirms the feature and its availability, users who find the current workflow cumbersome will have to continue entering a PIN after removing and reattaching their watch. But Phone to Watch Unlock represents a sensible, user-focused refinement that addresses one of the most common annoyances for wrist-worn devices paired to phones.
