Google is rolling out expanded scam protection for Pixel phones this month, and the feature is arriving in many more countries. With this update, Pixel users in the UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, India, Germany, Mexico, Japan, and France will begin receiving warnings when a text message that appears to be a scam is delivered by an app other than their default messaging app.
If you own a Pixel and use chat apps such as WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, or other third-party messaging apps in addition to the stock Messages app, this update is relevant. Scam messages no longer need to appear only in your primary SMS inbox to trigger protection. Google’s warning system is designed to detect suspicious messages wherever they arrive, giving you a clear alert before you tap links, reply with personal information, or take any action that could put you at risk.
Scam alerts expand across apps and countries
Google has been gradually building out protections against fraud and spoofing across its products. Earlier this year, for example, the company launched Fake Call Detection to help identify spoofed voice calls. This month’s update applies a similar detection approach to text-based scams and extends the coverage beyond Google’s own apps to third-party chat applications in the nine named countries.
Pixel users in the United States will receive a slightly different experience. Instead of system-wide detection across all apps, the warnings in the U.S. appear through Gboard, Google’s keyboard app, when it is active inside a third-party chat application. When Gboard is enabled and you open a conversation, it can surface an alert if the message content looks like a scam while you are composing a reply or interacting with the text.
Across all regions, the mechanics are simple and focused on helping users avoid scams. If a message exhibits characteristics commonly associated with fraud—such as unusual requests for money, urgent demands for account details, or links to impersonation sites—the system will display a notification warning you that the content may be malicious. The warnings are a safety layer, not an absolute guarantee, but they provide an additional checkpoint to prevent accidental engagement with scam messages.
Other features in this month’s Pixel update
Alongside enhanced scam protection, Google is including several other refinements for Pixel phones and Pixel Watch devices as part of this month’s Pixel Drop. Small usability improvements aim to make common actions faster and more convenient.
One notable change is an updated VIP contacts feature for the home screen widget. The widget now allows quick one-tap calls or texts to your most important contacts. It collects and displays recent conversation snippets from multiple sources—Google Messages, your phone Dialer, and supported third-party chat apps like WhatsApp—so you can reach frequent contacts more quickly without switching apps.
There is also a themed update tied to audiobooks: new Harry Potter audiobook theme packs are arriving on Pixel devices to complement Audible’s new full-cast audio editions. The themes provide visual customization and audio-related enhancements for fans who enjoy themed interfaces while listening to books.
On the wearable side, Pixel Watch models are receiving gesture improvements. Pixel Watch 3 and newer devices gain an expanded version of the one-handed pinch gesture that Google introduced previously, enabling you to scroll through the notification tray by pinching. Additionally, Pixel Watch 4 and later models receive enhancements to the raise-to-talk gesture used to wake Gemini and start voice interactions. These refinements are intended to make quick interactions on the watch more reliable and fluid.

As with any staged rollout, availability may vary by carrier and region, so it may take some time before every eligible device shows the new features.
