Google Chrome AI Mode Gets Major Upgrade

Google recently announced an update to AI Mode in Chrome that introduces a dual-pane interface, allowing users to browse websites and interact with search tools at the same time. The new layout keeps search context visible while users open and explore pages, enabling a smoother flow between discovery and deep dives into content. By preserving the search pane alongside the main page view, AI Mode aims to reduce context switching and make it easier to follow up on information without losing sight of search results.

The dual-pane approach places an AI-powered search panel next to the webpage a user is viewing. This makes it simple to compare product details, review specifications, or ask follow-up questions about what appears on the active page. For instance, a shopper examining a product listing can keep that product open in one pane while asking the AI assistant for comparisons, clarifications, or alternative options in the other. That persistent context helps the assistant provide answers that reference specific page content, improving relevance for tasks like price comparison, feature filtering, or verifying technical specifications.

The update also streamlines multitasking for research and creative work. With search context available at all times, users can quickly reference source material while drafting notes, extracting facts, or compiling summaries. The interface supports a more continuous workflow: instead of toggling between tabs or windows, a user can consult the AI pane, refine queries, and immediately see how suggested results relate to the open page.

A key addition is the ability to search across open tabs and combine content from multiple places into a single AI query. Chrome now includes a “plus” menu in the search box that surfaces recently used tabs, images, PDFs, and other open resources. Users can select items from that list to feed the AI a broader context—allowing complex queries that pull together information from several documents or pages. This feature reduces the friction of gathering sources manually and helps the assistant generate responses that consider multiple pieces of content at once.

Beyond tab-aware queries, Google has integrated creative tools directly into the search interface. Features such as Canvas and image generation are now available from within AI Mode, enabling users to move seamlessly between searching for ideas and producing visual content. These integrated tools support a variety of creative workflows, from brainstorming concepts and sketching layouts to generating images that match a search-driven brief. Embedding these capabilities into the search pane makes them easier to discover and use without leaving the browsing context.

The update also improves follow-up interactions. Because the assistant retains knowledge of the active page, users can ask more precise, context-rich questions — for instance, requesting a product’s dimensions be converted to different units, or asking for a step-by-step summary of instructions found on a page. The assistant can reference the page’s text and images to answer accurately, which is particularly useful for shopping, troubleshooting, or technical research.

Google says the new AI Mode features are first available to users in the United States, with a broader international rollout planned over the coming months. As the company expands access, it intends to refine the experience based on user feedback and usage patterns, making iterative changes that prioritize clarity, responsiveness, and privacy controls. The launch emphasizes convenient access to generative tools while keeping user workflows intact, and aims to balance powerful assistant capabilities with straightforward ways to review and validate the AI’s output.

The redesign of AI Mode in Chrome reflects an ongoing shift toward search experiences that blend browsing and generative AI assistance.
