Spotify Beta Adds Chat Feature to Talk Directly with the App

Spotify has announced a new conversational AI feature for Premium subscribers that lets users interact with the app by text or voice. The company says the feature will roll out gradually in beta to eligible users in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden. When available, the assistant will be accessible from the Home screen and the Now Playing view on iOS and Android devices, enabling more natural interactions without leaving the app.

The new tool accepts open-ended prompts, so users can ask for broad or exploratory music recommendations such as “Play some artists that I haven’t heard before.” After the initial request, listeners can refine results through follow-up prompts—asking the assistant to focus on a particular artist’s recent music, request a more upbeat mood, or adjust genre and era preferences. Common playback actions like queuing songs, skipping tracks, and saving favorites can also be handled directly through these conversational commands, streamlining music discovery and playback for Premium users.

Beyond basic playback control, the assistant adds richer context around audio content. For music tracks, podcasts, and audiobooks, users can ask questions about album release dates, creative inspirations, and related works that feature the same artist or creator. The assistant is designed to draw on available metadata and contextual cues to provide informative responses about the content you’re listening to, helping listeners learn more about songs, episodes, and authors without leaving the listening experience.

Spotify’s conversational AI also leverages a listener’s past behavior to offer personalized responses. By tapping into listening history and in-app preferences, the assistant can answer questions about your music taste, past listening habits, and previously played tracks or episodes. This personalized layer aims to make recommendations feel more relevant and to simplify tasks like revisiting past playlists, rediscovering forgotten artists, or finding episodes you started but didn’t finish.

Eligible Premium users will see new ways to talk to Spotify across Home and the Now Playing view on mobile. By typing or speaking directly in the app, you can have a back-and-forth conversation to choose what’s playing, learn about the music you love, revisit your listening history, and go deeper on podcasts and audiobooks, all without leaving Spotify.

Because the feature is being introduced as a beta, Spotify will likely refine the conversational assistant based on user feedback. Early access in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden will let the company monitor performance, understanding, and usefulness across different accents, languages, and listening behaviors on Android and iOS devices. Beta testing is a common step for large-scale product rollouts, allowing iterative improvements to both the AI’s conversational abilities and the in-app experience.

For Premium subscribers who frequently explore new music, rely on podcasts, or enjoy audiobooks, the conversational assistant promises a more interactive and hands-free approach to managing content. Whether you prefer typing a quick request or speaking while multitasking, the assistant is intended to reduce friction—making it easier to discover new artists, get context about favorite tracks, and control playback with natural language.

As the feature becomes available more broadly, listeners should expect ongoing updates and enhancements that improve accuracy, personalization, and the breadth of information the assistant can provide. Spotify’s move toward conversational AI reflects a broader trend in music and media apps to integrate voice and text-based AI tools that adapt to individual listening habits and make content discovery faster and more intuitive.
