How the New Timer Works
Until now, WhatsApp has offered three fixed disappearing message timers: 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days. The new “After reading” option appears alongside those choices, but it behaves differently and includes shorter, more immediate durations. With the “After reading” setting, you can choose one of three countdown lengths: 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours. Once the recipient opens the message, the selected timer begins and the message is automatically deleted when the timer expires.
The design also accounts for the case where a recipient never opens the message. If a message with the “After reading” option remains unread, WhatsApp will still remove it after 24 hours, preventing unread messages from lingering indefinitely. The feature is configurable on a per-chat basis, so you can enable it for particular conversations where that behavior makes sense without applying it universally to all your chats. It is off by default, so none of your existing conversations will change unless you purposely enable the new setting.
