This capability brings still photos to life by generating natural-looking movement, stylistic changes, or playful overlays based on the effect you choose. The tool is designed for ease of use and lets users create shareable clips from existing photos without needing advanced editing skills.
To begin, open the Google Photos app and tap the Create icon at the bottom of the screen. From the menu that appears, select Photo to video and then tap Try now to open the editor. The editor will prompt you to pick a single photo from your library. Note that landscape images are typically cropped to fit the app’s portrait video format, so you may want to select photos that work well within a vertical frame or be prepared for automatic cropping.
After selecting a photo, the editor offers several movement and style options. The Subtle Movements effect introduces small, realistic motions—such as a gentle head turn, a subtle smile, or a minor hand gesture—to preserve the natural look of the subject. The I’m Feeling Lucky option applies a surprise effect that can include livelier motions or decorative overlays like confetti and playful embellishments. For users aged 18 and older, Google Photos also provides a text prompt feature: you can type a short description of the style or movement you want to see and the AI will attempt to generate a clip that reflects that prompt. The interface also supplies suggested prompts to help inspire your own ideas or to refine the final output.
Once you choose an effect or enter a prompt, the system will take a few moments to render the video. The AI processes the image and creates a short clip that blends the chosen motion and any stylistic elements. When the generation completes, the results screen lets you preview the clip and decide next steps. If you like the result, you can save the video to your library or share it immediately with friends and family through your preferred apps. If the initial output does not match your expectations, tapping Regenerate will produce another variation of the same effect so you can choose a version that better fits your vision.
Keep in mind a couple of practical details when using this feature. First, the newly created video will be saved under the current date—the date you generated the clip—rather than the original date when the photo was taken. This means your photo and its AI-generated video may appear separately in chronological views. Second, because the tool uses automated cropping and AI motion synthesis, results can vary depending on the composition, resolution, and subject matter of the original photo. Images with clear facial features or distinct subjects tend to produce more convincing motion, while complex scenes or heavily edited pictures may yield less predictable outcomes.
This functionality is intended to be accessible and fun: it gives casual users a simple way to animate memories and create short, engaging clips for sharing or saving.
