Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Z Fold8 has proven far more popular than the company expected, creating an unexpected supply chain strain. According to a report from ZDNet Korea, demand for the handset has driven a shortage of Display Driver ICs (DDIs). Samsung is increasing component orders to keep up, but production of these critical display chips has become a significant bottleneck for the new foldable.
The DDIs used in the Galaxy Z Fold8 are custom-designed by Samsung’s System LSI division and manufactured by Taiwan-based foundry UMC using a 22-nanometer process. UMC’s capacity for this specific process node is reportedly already running at full tilt. The foundry has declined Samsung’s request to accelerate output because changing production schedules would disrupt other semiconductor lines and existing customer commitments. As a result, scaling DDI production quickly is proving difficult despite strong demand for the Fold8.

Unlike general-purpose components such as DRAM or other interchangeable chips, these DDIs are uniquely tailored for the Z Fold8’s flexible OLED display. That customization means manufacturers cannot swap in generic or off-the-shelf parts when supplies are tight. To bridge the gap and sustain mass production, Samsung plans to draw from DDI inventory originally set aside for next year’s development cycle. This emergency measure aims to keep assembly lines moving while the foundry’s output remains constrained.
Even with that contingency, restoring a stable supply will take time. A typical production cycle for a DDI — from wafer fabrication through final testing and pairing with a Samsung Display OLED panel — can take roughly four months before a finished chip is ready to be integrated into a device. Because of this lead time, any short-term production squeeze can translate into delayed shipments or limited retail availability until manufacturing normalizes.
The current situation highlights how specialized components create unique vulnerabilities in modern electronics supply chains. When a key part is custom-made and produced on an older but necessary process node, suppliers with limited capacity become chokepoints. For Samsung, the DDI shortage illustrates the trade-offs involved in pushing cutting-edge form factors: advanced displays and custom chips drive product differentiation, but they also increase dependence on a narrower set of suppliers and processes.
To address broader production needs, Samsung is also increasing orders for other key Fold8 components, including the hinge mechanisms and Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) used on the foldable display. These parts are equally important for the device’s performance and durability, and rising demand across all components adds complexity to supply planning and logistics.
Market timing adds another layer of urgency. With reports that Apple may be preparing its own first-generation foldable device, competition in the foldable smartphone category is expected to intensify. That competitive backdrop gives Samsung additional incentive to maintain availability and meet demand as quickly as possible, since any prolonged shortages could create openings for rivals or dampen consumer momentum.
For customers, the immediate impact could include longer wait times, limited stock at launch, or staggered availability across regions. For retailers and carriers, planning inventory and promotions becomes more challenging when a critical component constrains how many units can be produced. Samsung’s strategy of reallocating future inventory can reduce near-term disruption, but it may also require rebalancing production schedules and development plans for next-generation devices.
In the longer term, the episode may prompt Samsung and other manufacturers to reassess how they manage capacity for custom parts and whether additional foundry partnerships or capacity investments are needed for key process nodes.
