Garmin Adds Fall Detection and Voice Control to Multiple Watches

Garmin has released a new set of firmware updates for several of its smartwatch models and compatible Edge cycling computers. The rollout brings a variety of practical features and refinements aimed at improving safety, hands-free convenience, and training personalization for devices including the fēnix 8, Forerunner 570 and 970, Venu 4, and vívoactive 6.

One of the most notable additions in this update is fall detection for the Venu 4. When enabled, this feature can detect a hard impact and automatically send a live location message to preselected emergency contacts. Users can choose how the feature operates: it can run continuously for all-day protection or be limited to specific activities, giving people flexibility in how they use the safety function.

The update also expands voice interaction capabilities across supported devices. With hands-free voice control, users can perform common tasks by speaking the wake phrase “Okay, Garmin.” Voice commands can activate the onboard flashlight, begin workout sessions, launch timers, and more, making it easier to operate the watch during workouts or when hands are occupied. This enhancement aims to simplify device interaction and reduce the need to navigate menus while active.

Training and fitness tools receive meaningful improvements as well. Garmin has introduced tailored quick workouts that let users set custom durations and intensity levels for short, focused training sessions. These quick workouts provide an efficient option for fitting exercise into a busy day without losing structure or oversight.

Garmin Run Coach plans have been expanded and refined. The updated plans now include structured run-and-walk intervals, lower-volume training options for users seeking reduced weekly load, and daily plan adjustments informed by recovery and readiness metrics. These enhancements are designed to better match training to the user’s current condition, helping athletes and casual runners progress safely and effectively.

For winter-sports and indoor sessions, the update adds an Indoor XC Ski profile to provide dedicated tracking for cross-country skiing performed indoors, as well as improved support for indoor trainers used by cyclists. These profiles help ensure activity data is more accurate and relevant to the exercise being performed, whether it’s on snow or on a stationary trainer.

Cyclists using compatible Edge computers will also see enhancements. The update introduces improved Enduro ride profiles designed to detect and automatically switch between climbing and descent modes during a ride. This automatic toggling aims to optimize how the device records ride segments and present appropriate metrics for each portion of a route, making long or varied rides easier to monitor.

Installations are straightforward: users can apply the updates by enabling automatic updates and syncing their device through Garmin Connect. Alternatively, devices can be updated by connecting to a computer and using Garmin Express. Following either method ensures the latest features and fixes are delivered to the watch or cycling computer.
